CANBERRA. 18 February. UNHCR expresses its deep concern and sadness at the loss of life of one individual and serious injuries of a number of others that have resulted from recent incidents on Manus Island involving asylumseekers who had been transferred from Australia to Papua New Guinea for an assessment of their claims for refugee status and, in the case of refugees, settlement.
UNHCR appreciates the information provided by the Australian Government in relation to the incidents to date and welcomes its commitment to investigate fully the events that took place, and the
circumstances that occurred in the lead-up to these events.
While full details are yet to become available, UNHCR stands ready to review with the Governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea how best to ensure that asylum-seekers, refugees and stateless persons receive appropriate assistance and protection.
